"I am fortunate... that McKenna has been to my classroom many times... amazing things happen when McKenna develops skills children may have but are not tapping into. Her workshop helps students paint their ideas with words. Stories and feelings dance. It is exciting...to have students ask for more writing time. As a seasoned teacher, I use the skills learned from her visits every year. Thank you McKenna for the ideas and skills!"

  • Impact of Style I: Structure is a ten-week, online writing course designed to teach you to present your ideas clearly through the use of the basic tools of style -- tools that have proven effective in oratory and writing for more than two thousand years.
  •
  • There are, of course, many excellent writing workshops, but Impact of Style goes deeper than the disciplines of genre, scene and setting, character, dialogue, plot and point of view. Impact of Style focuses on language and the richness that emerges as we select and arrange our words for their greatest emotional impact.
  •
  • In Impact of Style, you learn to express your ideas more fluently through precise diction, coherence, balanced composition, emphasis and pacing, as well as through the diverse figures of speech and tropes that create the subtle texture known as 'voice.' [See Syllabus.]
  •
  • Lectures and supplemental materials are presented in a down-to-earth manner; a classroom discussion area allows students and the instructor to exchange questions, comments, and observations.
  •
  • Weekly lectures and reading assignments are accompanied by written assignments in which you apply the theory of rhetoric to practical exercises. These completed assignments are posted in the classroom, and students are encouraged to comment upon each other's works. Student-to-student interaction is an invaluable tool in developing your writing skill.
  •
  • During each week's lesson, you have the opportunity to analyze and revise an essay, short story or speech you have drafted. This revision can be submitted to the instructor through an online, personal notebook, which allows you to work privately with the instructor.
  •
  • A major discipline within the Art of Rhetoric is "Imitation of the Masters," and only through recognizing the integral nature of composition and literature can we expect to be fluent in our ideas. Each week you will analyze, then imitate an excerpt from one of the many masters of writing and oratory -- from many cultures and from many periods of history. [See Our Philosophy ].
  •
  • AUDIENCE: Excellent for writers of all levels; fiction and non-fiction, including technical writing. Excellent also for continuing education for teachers. Clock hours available in most districts; detailed syllabus provided upon request.
